PROFILE OF THE PROVOST – FCET ASABA

The President and Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Major General Mohammadu Buhari Rtd through the Honorable Minister of education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu on April 2019 appointed Dr. Mrs. Anene-Okeakwa J.E. as the 5th Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba, Delta State.

This astute, erudite and seasoned scholar of no mean repute started the journey of her enviable life endeavor which blossomed into a fruitful academic career at Asaba Girls Grammar School Asaba where she obtained her West African Examination Certificate in 1981. Upon completion of her secondary education, this young paragon gained admission into Bendel State University, Abraka Campus where she studied Home Economics (NCE) in 1987. After this, she enrolled and obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc.(Ed) Home Economics from the same Institution in 1990. Of course not being settled, the enthusiasm for academic prowess fired Mrs. Anene-okeakwa J.E. to obtain a Masters degree (MEd) in Home Economics from the Prestigious, University of Nigeria Nsuka (UNN) in 1999. Filled with the insatiable quest for academic achievements, Mrs. Anene-Okeakwa J.E. pursued her Doctorate Degree with a burning passion and determination, a quality which has influenced her entire life and academic career. Her persevered effort was crowned with sterling success in 2016 when she obtained PhD in Home Economics and Hospitality Management still from the University of Nigeria Nsuka (UNN). She is currently a Chief lecture and a Reader.

The career history of Dr. Mrs. Anene-Okeakwa started from a humble beginning when she came for her National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in her present employer, Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba in the year 1990. As a reward for her selfless service and in recognition of her outstanding performances, she was retained and employed as an Assistant lecturer in 1991. Having carved her career teeth from the cradles of humility, her career progression graduated to lecturer III in 1993, lecturer II in 1995, lecturer I in 2001, senior lecturer in 2004, Principal lecturer in 2007 and her present position as a Chief lecturer/Reader in 2011.

The reward for good job is more jobs. Dr. Anene-Okeakwa as a dedicated and proficient worker has held several key Management positions in the College. This includes; Deputy Provost to the immediate past Provost of the College between 2014 and 2016. Dean, School of Vocational Education between 2011 and 2014. In the year 1992 to 1993, she was the Overseer, Home Economics Education Department. Other positions and responsibilities she had held in the college are; Acting Head, Department of Home Economics 1993 – 1997, Member Academic Board 1993 – 1997, Member, School Board of Studies, School of Vocational Education , 1993 till date, Head of Department of Home Economics Education 2010 – 2011, Member, Expanded Management Committee, 2012 till date.

A golden fish they say has no hiding place. Dr. Anene-Okeakwa as an amiable but disciplined achiever has received several awards and recognitions from her immediate community in particular and the society in general. In 1987 she was awarded the Provost’s prize for overall best academic performance in Vocational and technical studies, Bendel State University, Abraka Campus. Leadership Ambassador Award by Nigerian Peace Magazine “Distinguished for Administrative Excellence” Honesty, Hard work, Transparency and Accountability Presented in 2014 based on her Social-Economic contributions towards the Development of Nigeria. Golden Award for Achievers for Outstanding Leadership 2014, Award by National Waves Newspaper Magazine. She also received an award for Excellence “Distinguished for Administrative Excellence, Honesty, Accountability, Transparency and Encouraging Academic Excellence from the Nigerian Print Journalism Development Organization – Publishers of the Press-Golden Award for Excellence. Dr. Mrs. Anene-Okeakwa during her tenure as deputy provost was decorated with the Best Deputy Provost of the Year award in the year 2014.

From the student and the college community, she has equally received several other awards like; “Mother of All Students” in 2014 from Students of the Federal College of Education (Tech), Asaba. Excellence Service Award in recognition of her excellent contributions to the growth and development of Vocation in the year 2016, from School of Vocational Education Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba, Humanitarian Service award by Students’ Union Government, Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba (2016). Also, a Meritorious Award was conferred on her by Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba Chapter. The Anioma Media Network in 2016 also honoured her with an Award of Excellence as Anioma Outstanding Female Educationist.

Besides the numerous awards and recognitions accorded to her, Dr. Mrs. Anene-Okeakwa has equally been commended by the management of the college for dedication and commitment to work. Some of the commendations include; Commendation from Top Management, Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba in 2013 for submitting a Succinct Report by Dress Code Committee which she was the Chairman. Letter of Commendation from expanded management of Federal College of Education (Technical), (in place of Council) at the 2nd meeting held between 22nd and 23rd March, 2016 for commitment and dedication to duty as Deputy Provost, Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba. In 2016, she received a Commendation letter from Top Management, Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba, for orderly allocation of offices and furniture to Staff.

Dr. Mrs. Anene-Okeakwa is a devout Christian with the fear of God and respect for humanity. She hails from Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State. She has since assumed office and commenced her duties as the Chief Executive Officer of the Federal College of Education Technical Asaba. With her thinking cap on, a lot is already happening as the college is beginning to wear new look.
